Honoring the Legends of the Rally
The Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally, one of the premier events in the African rally calendar, has attracted a multitude of skilled drivers from across the continent and beyond. While many have won and made their mark, there are a select few who have risen above the rest, achieving feats that earn them a place on the prestigious Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally Wall of Fame.
Manvir Baryan: The Three-Time Champion
One name that stands out on this wall of fame is Manvir Baryan, a Kenyan rally driver who has carved a legacy through his record-breaking performances at the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally. Baryan’s remarkable achievement of winning the rally three times consecutively is a testament to his skill, determination, and mastery of the Ugandan rally terrain.
Navigated by Drew Sturrock, Baryan’s journey to the wall of fame began in 2017. In that year, driving a Skoda Fabia R5—the only R5 car in the event at the time—the duo made their debut at the Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally. The competition was fierce, but Baryan and Sturrock delivered a stunning performance, taking home the top prize with confidence and style.
The following year, in 2018, Baryan and Sturrock returned to Uganda to defend their title. The stakes were higher, with more experienced competitors entering the rally. However, the pair’s seamless coordination and aggressive driving style allowed them to dominate the event once again, securing a back-to-back victory.
In 2019, the duo was back for a third time, determined to achieve what no one had done before: winning three consecutive Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally titles. They navigated the challenging tracks with precision and flair, ultimately achieving their historic hat trick. This remarkable feat solidified their place among the greatest rally drivers in Uganda’s history.
The Legacy Continues
Manvir Baryan’s accomplishments at the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally are a source of inspiration for aspiring rally drivers across Africa. His three consecutive wins represent not only his skill and dedication but also the enduring spirit of the sport.
As the rally continues to grow and attract new talent, the Wall of Fame serves as a reminder of the incredible achievements of those who have come before. Manvir Baryan and Drew Sturrock’s names will forever be etched into the history of the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally, a testament to their dominance and the excitement they brought to the event.
