Profile:
“Order in the cockpit!” That’s the first thing you hear when Ali Katumba straps in. A lawyer by profession and a co-driver by destiny, Ali doesn’t just read pace notes he prosecutes the stages with sharp precision and defends every second like his life depends on it.
Known across Uganda’s rally scene as “The Lawyer of Speed,” Ali is always ready with courtroom lines like:
- “I object to unnecessary braking!”
- “Sustained — keep it flat out!”
- “Overrule that fear, Yasin, let’s send it!”
- “Your honor, I present Exhibit A: 5 left into 3 right, don’t cut!”
As the 2023 Uganda National Rally Co-Driver Champion with Yasin Nasser, Ali has proven that in rally, just like in law, it’s all about the right timing, the right argument (note), and never losing your cool under cross-examination… or high-speed pressure.

Inside the cockpit, Ali commands with such authority that even the bumps and potholes know better than to challenge him. If being calm under pressure were a legal case, Ali would win it without even calling a witness.
His loyalty to the Moil Rally Team is “as binding as a signed contract under seal”, and this year at the Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally, Ali and Yasin come with a clear legal brief:
- “Count One: Secure maximum ARC points at home.”
- “Count Two: Lock down NRC points to strengthen the championship case.”
Fresh off a “solid defense” at the WRC/ARC Safari Rally where they clinched 3rd place, the duo is ready to cross-examine the Pearl stages and convict the competition — no appeals allowed.
When Ali says “5 right into 2 left, caution,” you don’t just listen you comply immediately, or risk being held in high-speed contempt of court!
At this year’s Pearl Rally, trust Ali Katumba to deliver the final verdict: victory.
